This week in science, we investigated how quickly sugar dissolves under different conditions.

We began by discussing what it means for a substance to dissolve and made predictions about which conditions would help sugar dissolve the fastest. We then carried out a fair test, carefully measuring the same amount of sugar and water each time while changing one variable.

Working in small groups, we explored different conditions, including varying the temperature of the water and stirring at different speeds. We observed closely, timed how long the sugar took to dissolve, and recorded our results accurately in tables.

The children showed excellent scientific skills throughout the lesson. They worked collaboratively, made thoughtful predictions, recognised patterns in their results, and discussed possible reasons for what they observed.

Year 6 had a fantastic opportunity to work with local author Jess Butterworth during a special writing workshop at school. The session gave us a fascinating insight into how real authors develop ideas and bring stories to life.

Jess began by explaining her own writing process and showed us how she plans characters and settings before starting a story. We discovered that authors spend a lot of time imagining every detail about their characters, including their personality, interests, strengths and challenges.

Taking inspiration from Jess's books, the children then designed their own unique characters. They carefully thought about what their character would look like, how they would behave and what adventures they might experience. 

Next, we moved on to creating an island setting for our stories. Using maps, sketches and descriptions, the children designed imaginative islands complete with mountains, forests, hidden caves, waterfalls and mysterious landmarks. Jess then answered questions about the writing process and becoming an author.
